Hi,
I’m continuing to work my way through my Unstoppable Affiliate
where I’m still at the research stage. The research stage in
affiliate marketing is by far the most important. How well you do
this part, how thoroughly you research your potential niches will
dictate whether you make a little money, a lot of money or lose
money.
Because we just want to get on with the making money part, we
have to fight the urge to rush this part. However, as I’ve said
taking time to identify potentially profitable niches will pay
off big time later on.
One of the mistakes that I made by being in too much of a hurry
was to miss out the finding an affiliate offer for a product
before creating the website. I did my research using Offer Vault,
oDigger and Commission Junction and decided that the Dukan Diet
was worth building a niche offer around.
Admittedly it had been around for quite some time but was still
popular and people were still making good commissions with it. I
identified a few keyword phrases that I felt were less
competitive and quickly put together a WordPress site for it.
Then I logged into the affiliate network that managed the Dukan
Diet affiliate program, in this case Commission Junction, and
applied for links to promote it. Guess what, the company turned
down my request. I re-applied putting forward my case for why I
should be accepted and got turned down again.
This happens sometimes for any number of reasons. It was nothing
to do with Commission Junction, I have several offers running
through their network, but the company. For whatever reason they
felt that maybe they had enough affiliates promoting their offer.
I don’t know what the reason was, and you rarely do find out, but
what I do know is that I should have identified this BEFORE I
created the site.
I got impatient, skipped a vital step and wasted time when I
could have been working on another offer that I was going to be
able to promote. A vital part of the research phase is to check
whether you can get the links to promote the offer that you are
working on.
In this case I was able to put Amazon links on there and still get
some benefit from the work I’d done.
The steps are;
* Come up with a broad niche idea based on your initial
thoughts. For me ideas arise from all sorts of directions. I
may be checking out magazines in a book store, or I may see
a new ad on TV for a product that sparkes my interest, or I
may get a clue from one of the many Internet channels for
identifying niches. These include;
* Google trends (www.google.com/trends) tells you what
the hot searches and niches are and identifies whether
they are going up in popularity or down or remaining
consistent.
* Google Zeitgeist (www.google.com/zeitgeist) which shows
you the fastest growing searches in various categories
and niches within those categories.
* Yahoo Buzz (www.buzz.yahoo.com) to find out what peole
are talking about.
* eBay listings (www.listings.ebay.com) to find out what
the best sellers are or sub-niches in a category with
eBay pulse (http://pulse.ebay.com).
* Enter your broad keyword into your keyword tool of choice
(the most popular and free one is the Google adwords keyword
tool) and look for less competitive keywords from within the
list of keywords returned. Use exact match for this. Any
keyword with over 3000 searches may be a good one to work
with although 1000 searches can still be good if competition
and payout work out OK.
* Select a promising keyword and search for it in Google.
Check out the first page results to see if those sites
listed could be beaten with the right amount of content and
linking. It’s surprising sometimes how really ugly and just
plain bad some sites are that are ranking well.
* When you think you’ve identified a keyword worth working on
do a search on Google for an affiliate program for it by
typing in your-keyword “affiliate”.
Once you have an affiliate program, apply for an affiliate link.
If you’re accepted, begin to built a site around it and build
content and backlinks. This is the basic principle that I’m using
although there are lots more research tactics that you can use to
really hone in on a good niche that you can build in as you
progress with this.

We have a saying in the UK, don’t know whether it’s used where
you are, that goes ” you wait for hours for a bus then 2 come
along together” or variations on that theme.
I’ve mentioned that I’ve been working through the Unstoppable
Affiliate program from Andrew Hansen and Josh Spalding and am
using the techniques that they use to supplement what I’ve been
doing in my own affiliate marketing. I have to say again that it
is an excellent program.
I didn’t think I’d see anything to come even close to it, but
this week I was made aware of another product from someone I’d
never heard of before even though she also lives in the UK. Her
name is Christine Clayfield and her product is Newbie to
Millionaire.
It’s amazing to me how there can be millionaires working away
unheard of right under your nose, so to speak, without you having
the faintest clue that they exist. The person that made me aware
of Christine’s product was so glowing in praise for it that I
bought it right away and have spent a couple of days going
through it.
I haven’t covered everything in her book yet, it’s over 500 pages
long, but I have to say that it describes in detail how Christine
has gone from Newbie to Millionaire in 5 years and how anyone
else can too. Unusually, she even starts off by showing you
herself logging into her actual bank account with online banking
and scrolling down her bank receipts for 12 months to display well
over $1.8 million (£1 million).
In addition to the book, she includes links to somewhere between
70 – 80 videos on all aspects of building a business online. Once
again it’s refreshing to see what a sincere person she is as she
explains all of the things she’s experienced as she’s stumbled
her way to success over the last 5 years.
There’s a lot of rubbish out there for us to wade through but
occassionally you come across some gems like this one from
Christine and the one from Andrew and Josh which give you hope
that the Internet is coming of age and we’re finally seeing some
of the rubbish being weeded out.

The unusually sunny weather has continued here allowing us to
enjoy working on our businesses out in the garden, something I
really enjoy. I’m a fair weather person and tend to hibernate
here in the winter so this unusual extension of summer is very
welcome for me.
However, all good things must come to an end they say (I don’t
actually believe that by the way) and we’re being told that we
will soon be retuning to the normal weather for October which
after the summery temperatures will be quite a shock to the
system.
Sill while it lasts there’s still a chance that my tomotoes
outdoors will ripen, something that they’ve been reluctant to do
this year.
I’ve been dabbling at playing guitar since my youth and never
really progressed to where I would like to be so I’ve decided I
should start getting some lessons to brush up my very rusty
playing.
So I’m going back to basics with this too – seems like
I’m in a back to basics phase at the moment. I think it’s good
for us from time to time to reflect on where we are and where we
want to be.
