The Hare, The Tortoise & Internet Marketing

Strange title for a post you may think. So what’s the old story of the Hare & the Tortoise got to do with Internet marketing?

I’m sure you’ve heard of the story about the Hare and the Tortoise. If you haven’t the basis of the story is that they were challenged to a race and whoever won the race would win the hand of the fair young lady. In the story the young lady wanted the tortoise to win but clearly under normal circumstances the Hare would win hands down.

So on the day of the race, the Hare set off at a lightening pace leaving the Tortoise far behind. In fact he was so far in front that he decided he had plenty of time to take a nap. Meanwhile the Tortoise continued to plod along steadily all through the day and night passing by the Hare, who was still sleeping, and in the process won the race.

Now getting back to Internet marketing and what this story has in common with it.

If we look at the offers that bombard us all day, everyday they have a lot in common with the approach taken by the Hare. They are mostly get rich quick in some way or another. Just do these two or three simple things and the money will roll in. They are all focused on making money now or very soon. They are biased towards doing little or no work to achieve it.

You see, just like the Hare. Running the race was going to be easy, it wouldn’t take any effort on his part, he is known for his speed – yes?

Now I know that there are a lot of people who need to make money, some of you DO need to make money now and so these types of offers will appeal to you. Sadly, in most cases these types of offers either don’t work or are using some sort of quick fix or gimmick that quickly gets discovered by the sites that they are designed to take advantage of and the loophole is closed leaving you out in the cold still needing to make money but now more in debt.

There are lots more people, I’m sure, who want an alternative way of making money than having a job. For you replacing the income you get from a job in 3 – 6 months would probably be acceptable. This is the same approach taken by the Tortoise. If you do even a little research into the background of the people who are successful online you will see that they all built their success slowly over the course of several months or in many cases several years.

I’ve been online now for over 17 years and I don’t know of one overnight success story. I know of lots of success stories that happened over the course of a few weeks or months and those businesses continue to grow and prosper.

There’s another thing that becomes very clear when you analyse what happens online that relates back to the Hare and the Tortoise. There is a growing tendency, as I’ve said, for people to come online and immediately start buying these “get rich doing this” type of offers, what we call bright shiny objects.

What happens when they do? Almost always the product doesn’t work or is too complex to implement or requires special skills of some sort and ends up being a waste of money.

Trying it out takes a week or two and then it’s time to look for another option – or another bright shiny object (BSO) comes along. So the tally so far is two or more weeks down the line and more money spent.

The same thing happens with the next BSO and the next and before you know it several months have gone by and lots of money has been spent. (The Hare approach)

Compare that to the Tortoise approach.

Meanwhile, someone else comes online with the Tortoise mentality and selects a proven plan from one of the trusted long-term marketers online. They work methodically through the training, making sure to complete each step in the process and within a few months, (within 3 – 6 months is very easy to achieve), is making a job replacing income that allows them to quit their job and concentrate fully on ramping up their new online business.

You see, in the same amount of time we have one group still trying to make it online and lots of money out of pocket and the other group showing success with a lot less cost.

What’s the main difference between these two types of people? I believe that the difference is faith or belief. The people that take the slower methodical route have faith that if they find someone who is already doing what they want to do (and still doing it now, today – this is important) just stick to the training and complete every step they are taught, they will also become successful.

They put aside the nagging doubts, the little voice in their head that keeps telling them to quit because they’re not making money yet, and keep going. They don’t let any distractions take their focus away from what they want to achieve.

Looking at people who have followed this path I’ve seen some amazing success stories. And these success stories are not just people who are building businesses in the make money online niche, which is getting more and more competitive everyday. They are in a wide variety of niches that you wouldn’t think there would be a full-time business potential in.

My bottom line message here is to be more like the Tortoise. Find one of the online marketers who is doing what you want to do and that you feel you can work with. Check out their coaching programs and pick one that appeals to you.

Having made your selection, get their coaching program or training product and work through it. Block everything else out, ignore all new offers, WSO’s, JVZoo launches – everything – until you’ve worked through the product you bought and followed EVERY step.

Use their support staff to help you along the way – any coach that’s any good will have good support. Decide that you will make it work and go for it.

I know lots of the really good marketers online personally and can provide you with help and advice. Feel free to send me a support ticket at my support desk at www.asktrevorgreenfield.com and I’ll get back to you.

One of the things that provides the reassurance that it’s possible to make money online is reaching your first $100 day. Somehow, making $100 in a single day opens up a whole world of possibilities and more importantly strengthens your faith that making money online is possible.

If you learn to make one $100 you can make thousands of dollars just by duplicating the process, scaling it up.

When my subscribers ask me for my recommendation about who to follow I always suggest they start with Sarah Staar and her training that shows you how to build up to making $100 a day. After you reach that stage you have the experience to take on bigger challenges and expand from there.

If that appeals to you click the image below and check out what Sarah has to offer.

Until next time,

Trevor
